  • There are 6 changes in the squad compared to the previous year's team
  • Ravindra Jadeja is out of action due to a knee issue
The BCCI on Monday (September 12) announced Team India's 15-member squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup to be played in Australia. Rohit Sharma will be leading Team India in an ICC event for the first time in his career. It will also be the first ICC event (at the senior level) for Rahul Dravid as the head coach. He has won an U-19 World Cup and will hope to emulate that success in senior cricket.
While the selection committee made some surprising selections in the 2021 T20 World Cup squad, that isn't the case this year and no there's no out-of-the-box selection. Here, we compare the 2022 T20 WC squad to the previous squad and have a look at the complete changes -
In
There are as many as 6 additions in the 2022 T20 WC squad. Out of them, one player was surprisingly dropped last year while the other one was replaced before the submission of the final squad.
Yuzvendra Chahal, who was a shock omission from the previous edition of the T20 World Cup, is back and will lead the spin attack. Axar Patel is another player who is back in the squad. He was slated to play his first T20 WC last year but the selection committee replaced him with Shardul Thakur later.
Harshal Patel, Deepak Hooda and Arshdeep Singh are three players who made their debuts after the 2021 T20 WC and will play an ICC tournament at the highest level for the first time. All three players have played U-19 WC.
Dinesh Karthik, who was part of the MS Dhoni-led side that won the 2007 T20 WC, has retained his spot and looks ahead of Rishabh Pant in the pecking order.
Out
Ishan Kishan, Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Chahar, three surprising selections in the 2021 T20 WC squad, have all been dropped. Only Kishan has played for India since then. Shardul Thakur isn't part of the T20I side either while there was no comeback for Mohammed Shami in the 15-member squad. He can still make a case for himself by doing well against Australia and South Africa.
Ravindra Jadeja is out with a knee issue and is confirmed to sit out for the next 3-4 months. Axar has made his India return in Jadeja's absence.
