KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sanju Samson was not included in the squad for the T20 World Cup, including in the standbys.
  • According to a report, his name wasn't even mentioned in the selection meeting.
  • Fans are protesting across social media over his exclusion.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selected the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2022. There were no surprises in the squad, with the biggest plus point being the returns of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel due to injury. However, one of the biggest names that missed out from the tournament was Sanju Samson, who was not even included in the list of four standby players in the team.
In fact, according to a PTI report, Samson's name wasn't even discussed as a possibility in the selection meeting. "Sanju in any case will be playing the ODIs against South Africa as selectors will maintain the continuity from the Zimbabwe tour. Also there was never any discussions on dropping Pant. He is the only left-hander we have at the top and he can win a match on his day," a source at the BCCI had informed PTI.
Fans were furious at the decision with the hashtag #SanjuSamsonforT20WC. In fact, according to reports fans even have planned a protest at Thiruvananthapuram.
However, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad feels that Sanju Samson could not be a replacement to anyone in the squad at the T20 World Cup. “The question is, Sanju Samson, in place of who?" Prasad said in an interaction with The Indian Express.
The former wicketkeeper also said that if Samson was in their plans, he would have definitely featured in the Asia Cup 2022.
“Deepak Hooda gives you that extra bowling option. He can bat anywhere like Sanju, and Shreyas has done well in the home series against Sri Lanka and then in the West Indies. If the team management wanted to pick Sanju, they would have given him an opportunity in the Asia Cup or the upcoming home series against South Africa and Australia," he added.
