Bollywood has been ruthlessly engulfed by cancel culture at the moment. The two of the biggest releases of 2022, Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan, are severely impacted by the boycott calls made against them on social media.
Opening up about the increasing trend of boycotts, Arjun Kapoor has said that the Hindi film industry has made a mistake by keeping silent about it and thinking that their work will speak for itself. He also stressed that it is now time for the members of the fraternity to come together and take action against cancel culture.
"I think we made a mistake by being silent about it and that was our decency but people have started taking advantage of that. I think we made a mistake by thinking that ‘our work will speak for ourselves’. You know you don't always need to get your hand dirty but I guess we tolerated it a lot and now people have made this a habit," Arjun told Bollywood Hungama in a recent interview.
The Ek Villain Returns actor continued, “We need to come together and do something about it because what people write about us or the hashtags that trend, are far away from reality. When we do films that do good at the box office, then at that time people like us not because of our surnames but because of the film."
Arjun feels that the shine of Bollywood is getting affected as social media has been spewing hatred against it for a while now. “Even a new car will lose its shine if people will continue to toss mud on it. We have been facing this for years now,” he opined.
Meanwhile, the most recent film to face the internet’s wrath is Hrithik Roshan’s Vikram Vedha. Netizens called for it boycott after the superstar heaped praise on Laal Singh Chaddha.
