New Delhi: Admitting a plea of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy, the Supreme Court Wednesday said it would hear on July 26 the matter wherein a direction has been sought to be given to the Central government to declare the 'Ram Setu' a national heritage monument.
Ram Setu, also referred to as Adam's Bridge, is a combination of limestone shoals located between Pamban Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, and Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka.
Swamy had pleaded that the matter was urgent and small and needed to be listed for hearing
A Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli admitted the plea. A PTI report said during the hearing, CJI Ramana remarked on a lighter note that the matter be listed post his retirement.
Swamy pointed out in the court that the first round of the litigation had gone in his favour as the Union government had acknowledged the existence of Ram Setu. He added that a meeting was called in 2017 the concerned Union minister to look into his demand but nothing happened after that.
Swamy had made the demand to declare the Ram Setu a national heritage monument in his public interest litigation that he had filed against the controversial Sethusamudram Ship Channel project, which was launched by the then UPA-1 government of Dr Manmohan Singh.
