New Delhi: In a significant achievement to the flagship Make in India campaign, India will be exporting missile systems, rockets, and ammunition to Armenia to help the nation defend itself from Azerbaijan. According to reports, India has signed a deal with Armenia for the supply of defense systems, including the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers (MBRL) to the Armenian government.
According to a report in the Economic Times, the government-to-government deal was signed earlier this month. While the exact details of the deal are yet unknown, a report pegged the deal at a whopping Rs 2000 crore that will be covered during the coming months.
Pinaka system: Developed by DRDO, manufactured by Indian industry
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the Pinaka MBRL systems are manufactured by Indian defence industry partners. As a part of the deal, Armenia will also get anti-tank rockets systems and ammunition. The development may be viewed as a big push for the government's flagship Make in India program, also referred to by PM Narendra Modi as the Aatmanirbhar Bharat program.
According to reports, the Centre has set a target to sell defence equipment worth Rs 35,000 crore over the next three years. Previously, India has supplied four Swathi radar systems to the Armenian government at Rs 350 crore. The ongoing clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan are lined to the decades-old hostilities over control of the mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh region. While the area is recognised as part of Azerbaijan by the international community, it has been largely controlled by the Armenian population.
