Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) made the decision to extend its normal water delivery past July 26 on Friday. Following a strong rainstorm in the dam catchments, the local government had decided to cancel its decision of alternate day water rationing and chose to continue regular water delivery till July 26.
“The water cuts have been suspended as of now. Regular water supply will continue. But the civic administration will review water availability in dams and the need for cuts in future,” said Aniruddha Pawaskar, head of the PMC’s water department.
As a result of inadequate rainfall, dams' water reserves were depleted on July 4, forcing alternate-day water deliveries to urban areas.
The first wave of these cutbacks was supposed to last for eight days. However, the PMC provided a short-term solution to the water cutbacks that occurred from July 8 to July 11 owing to Ashadhi Wari and Bakari Eid.
After a decent stretch of rain in the second week of July, the usual water supply was extended until July 26.
The total water supply in the four dams in the Khadakwasla irrigation circle had decreased to 3.4 TMC, a three-year low, when the cuts were announced.
On Friday, the storage in the dams at Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar climbed to 19.99 TMC.
Earlier this month Annirudha Pawaskar, Chief Engineer and in-charge of the PMC’s water supply department said “The situation has been reviewed and considering the available quantity of water in the dams, the water supply will be normal till July 26,”.
