Chennai: Tamil Nadu's Chennai Pride Parade, which was held after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, participants danced to traditional beats.
Crowds of people gathered to participate in Pride Parade 2022 in Chennai and Bhubaneswar, under a brilliant and scorching sky, brighter colours of the rainbow flew.
Demanding equal rights, social recognition, and a dignified living in society was the major goal of the pride parade. They raise their voices against the discrimination and hardship they face in society while walking.
Pride Month is honoured in June, and people of all sexual orientations engage in parades to show their pride in their sexuality. Organised by the Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition, the walk, they said, was a way of asserting their presence, dignity, and self-respect.
The recent addition of transgender males as members of the Transgender Welfare Board and as eligible applicants for social welfare schemes for the first time in the 14-year history of the board was among the recent developments that were praised by Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition.
They also emphasised the opening of transgender clinics in Chennai and Madurai, with more to come, as well as the first State mental health policy to include LGBTIQ+ affirming mental health care.
The coalition also applauded the establishment of free bus transportation for transgender people and the facilitation of transgender women's self-help organisations.
The Coalition also suggests that educational institutions train their teaching and non-teaching staff on matters relating to LGBTIQA+ and children who identify as gender non-conforming. Additionally, they have demanded that restrooms in public spaces, such as hotels, hostels, and other businesses, include gender-neutral options.
