Kathmandu: A search team recovered the body of top US ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson from the Himalayas on Wednesday, two days after she went missing on the slopes of Nepal's Manaslu peak.
After climbing the eighth-highest mountain in the world on Monday with her companion Jim Morrison, Nelson lost control of her skis and disappeared while skiing back down, news agency AFP reported.
After arriving by helicopter at an altitude of roughly 6,700 metres (22,000 feet) and leading the search efforts, Morrison discovered her body on Wednesday morning.
Morrison managed to safely arrive at the base camp, but the desperate search effort on Monday and Tuesday was hampered by adverse weather, AFP reported.
Morrison said in an Instagram post, "I skied first and after a few turns Hilaree followed and started a small avalanche. She was swept off her feet and carried down a narrow snow slope down the south side (opposite from climbing route) of the mountain. I'm in Kathmandu with her and her spirit. My loss is indescribable and I am focused on her children and their steps forward. @hilareenelson is the most inspiring person in life and now her energy will guide our collective souls."
The North Face described Nelson (49), as "the most prolific ski mountaineer of her generation".
She was the first woman to climb Everest and the Lhotse peak in less than 24 hours, around a decade ago.
