Mizoram: In a major drugs seizure, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Mizoram police recovered illicit drugs worth Rs 167.86 crore. On September 23, a combined Assam Rifles and Zokhawthar Police team carried out an operation in Melbuk Village, Champhai district of Mizoram based on a tip-off.
The team recovered 5,05,000 tablets of methamphetamine worth Rs 167.86 crore. During the raid, the team also detained a woman in connection with the incident, ANI reported.
According to the official release, "A vehicle was spotted by the joint team moving suspiciously and on being intercepted and checked, it was found to be carrying Methamphetamine tablets (5,05,000 in number). The drugs were being carried by a woman in the vehicle and had a market value of approximately Rs 167,86,20,000 (167.86 crores)."
"The seized items and detained woman were handed over to Zokhawthar Police Station, Champhai District, Mizoram on 24 Sep 2022 for further investigation & legal proceedings," the statement further read.
Notably, in the past few years, the Assam Rifles has been actively chasing the illegal movement of drugs, weapons and explosives in the bordering states. Notably, the disturbed internal situation in Myanmar has led to a spike in this illegal trans-border movement of contraband and people.
According to the officials, if the number of migrants moving into Mizoram from Myanmar increases, these illegal activities are likely to get further accentuated.
