Pune: PMC starts participatory budgeting; invites project suggestions from citizens for works upto Rs 5 lakh

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is gearing up to start work on its annual budget for the upcoming financial year 2023-2024. For this, it has invited citizens' suggestions on projects that need to be done in their area. The citizens can suggest works of up to 5 lakhs by filling out an application form circulated by PMC.

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started the process of participatory budgeting (PB). The municipal corporation on Thursday appealed to the citizens to fill out the application forms suggesting works that can be included in the corporation's financial year (FY) 2023-2024 budget.
The budget of Pune Municipal Corporation for the upcoming financial year 2023-24 will be prepared soon and citizens can suggest works up to Rs 5 lakhs to get the work done in their area.
The budget for FY 2022-23 is currently in the implementation phase. The budget is Rs 8,500 crore.
The work of preparing the yearly budget usually starts after the month of January, but citizens’ suggestion of work is being invited for it from now.
Pune citizens are required to provide their locality with roads (re-asphalting only), footpaths, water supply, sewers, and bus stands (as advised by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd), buildings (repair only), and public toilets, street lights among others.
Applications will be made to propose to work up to Rs 5 lakh in respect of electricity, slum (repair only).
The PMC took to Twitter to invite suggestions from the citizens informing them that it was the only Indian city to do so.“Since 2006-07, Pune has pioneered the process of participatory budgeting (PB) in India. This process empowers citizens to propose innovative projects and solutions for their communities and neighborhoods,” it wrote.
Once the applications are checked, the suggested work will be included in the civic body budget. Citizens can get more information about this on the Pune Municipal Corporation's official website.
