New Delhi: Scotland will become the first country in the world to provide free and universal access to period products.
Authorities will now be legally mandated to ensure that period products are available for free to anyone who needs them, the Scottish government said.
Social Justice Secretary Shona Robison told news agency AFP, "Providing access to free period products is fundamental to equality and dignity, and removes the financial barriers to accessing them.”
She also said that they are “proud to be the first national government in the world to take such action.”
In November 2020, the Scottish parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Period Products Bill, which made free access to sanitary products in public venues a legal entitlement, AFP reported.
Sanitary goods were already free for students, but the measure made ministers legally responsible for ensuring that everyone has access to them.
Schools, colleges, and institutions must also provide a variety of period items in their restrooms for free.
Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, applauded the decision at the time.
