Amid surge in Covid-19 cases, Chennai Metro makes masks mandatory starting today (July 7)

The Chennai Metro Corporation has made wearing masks mandatory on metro trains and its premises from today, July 7, onwards. The corporation informed about the decision in a press release which urged people to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour in metro trains amid the surge in Covid-19 cases in Chennai.

Chennai: In view of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the state, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has made wearing face masks mandatory on Chennai Metro Train and its premises starting today, July 7.
“Due to recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Chennai, CMRL would like to announce that wearing a face mask in Chennai Metro premises and Metro Trains is mandatory with effect from 07.07.2022 to control the spread of COVID-19,” a press release from CMRL stated.
Stating that it is mandatory to wear face masks at metro station premises and inside metro trains, the release also urged people to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour. “Passengers are requested to co-operate in maintaining social distance while waiting and travelling in Metro Train,” the release said.
Tamil Nadu recorded 2,743 fresh Covid-19 cases taking the statewide tally to 34,90,834 on Wednesday. Chennai accounted for the majority of new cases with 1,062 cases. No causality due to coronavirus infection was registered in the last 24 hours in the state.
Chengalpet reported 403 new Covid cases, the tally in Coimbatore stood at 127, Vellore reported 113 cases while the remaining cases were spread across other districts. Mayiladuthurai recorded the least numbers with two cases.
Chennai is also the district with the highest (7,286) active infections and overall, 7,67,795 cases.
The death toll remained unchanged at 38,027. However, the number of recoveries rose to 34,35,090 with 1,791 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours. The state now has 17,717 active infections.
A total of 31,096 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.
