Pune: Man held for the murder of seven-year-old daughter, throws her in river

Pune: Police have arrested a man for the murder of his own daughter. The police were probing the disappearance of a seven-year-old girl from a village in Shirur taluka of Maharashtra’s Pune district. During their investigations the police found the little girl had been allegedly killed by her father who pushed her into a river.

Pune Rural police said that they have arrested the victim’s 32-year-old father, who works as a daily wage worker.

Police officials said that the seven-year-old girl was reported missing by her mother from a village in Shirur taluka on Tuesday. During their investigation the police realised that the girl's father had lied to them about his own movements. They found that the movements of the father were completely different from what he had told them during the initial investigation. This made the girl's father the number one suspect for the police and they then zeroed in on him, Indian Express reported.

Police said that they examined the CCTV footage of the area “In the footage of one of the security cameras in the area, the father was seen walking with the girl towards a bridge on the river. He is later seen carrying a gunny back on his shoulder. In the other footage, he is seen coming from the bridge alone without the girl and the bag. The father was subsequently placed under arrest. Primary probe has pointed that the father murdered his seven-year-old daughter.”

Officials said that the man is suspected of throwing the child in the river the same day she was reported missing. He was arrested on Wednesday on charges of murder.

“Prima facie it seems that the father killed the daughter as the family was facing several domestic issues, including financial woes”, the officer added.

Further probe is on in the case.
