Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said since an FIR has been filed against now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, there is no need to seek an apology from her over her controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad.
He also distanced himself from his party leader Imtiaz Jaleel's comments where he supported the demand to hang Nupur Sharma.
Talking about the mass protests and violence that broke out across the country yesterday, Owaisi said, "It's imperative for democracy there is no violence and it is the government's duty to stop it. There was firing on people in Ranchi, this shouldn't have happened."
"FIR has been filed against Nupur Sharma for such comments, law will take its own course and we don't need her apology," he said.
Reacting to the suspension of Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal from BJP, the AIMIM chief said, "PM Modi didn't listen to what I said in a speech in Bhiwandi 2-3 days after Nupur Sharma made those comments, but he immediately swung into action the moment foreign countries started reacting."
When asked about Imtiaz Jaleel's comments, Asaduddin Owaisi said, "On Imtiaz Jaleel's statement on Nupur Sharma, our party tweeted and made the stand clear that action should be taken against her in accordance with law of the country."
"This is our party's official stand which's different from his statement and everybody has to abide by it," he added.
Yesterday, the Patiala House Court sent 30 All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) activists to three days of judicial custody in connection with the demonstration at the Parliament Police Station over inflammatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad.
The New Delhi District Police on Thursday arrested 30 AIMIM activists in connection with the demonstration.
