KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • India hosted Australia in the first T20I of the three-match series in Mohali
  • The visitors chased down 209 in the 20th over
  • Nathan Ellis scalped 3 wickets in the win
India kicked off their home season with the first T20I of the three-match series against Australia on Tuesday (September 20). The home team failed to defend a big target of 209 as the Australian batters did the job with ease. The Indian bowlers struggled throughout the course of Aussie batting and barring Axar Patel, the rest of the bowlers spent runs with an economy rate of over 11.00.
With the bowlers struggling, the last thing captain Rohit Sharma would have wanted was wrong feedback from wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik regarding the DRS calls. A wicketkeeper has a big role in deciding whether his team should challenge the on-field umpire's call or not.
And during the 1st T20I, Karthik wasn't sure when Umesh Yadav trapped Glenn Maxwell in front of the stumps. Despite that, Rohit went for the review and then hilariously gave a death stare to Karthik. The video of their 'bromance' has been a hit on social media.
Karthik was picked ahead of Rishabh Pant in the first T20I. While he started the Asia Cup 2022 ahead of Rishabh Pant, he was dropped later due to the lack of handers in India's playing XI.
Courtesy of KL Rahul's half-century, Suryakumar Yadav's 46 and an unbeaten 71 off just 30 balls from Hardik Pandya, India put on a huge total of 208/6 on the board. Nathan Ellis shone with the ball and scalped 3 wickets.
Opening the innings in the absence of David Warner, Cameron Green made most of the opportunity and slammed 61 off 30 to give a flying start to Australia. He added 39 runs for the first wicket with Aaron Finch and another 70 runs for the 2nd wicket with Steve Smith.
India did make a comeback during the middle overs. Matthew Wade took the charge during the last three overs and slammed an unbeaten 45 off 21 to propel Australia to a win. The 2nd T20I of the series will be played in Nagpur on September 23.
