New Delhi: Under the banner of Sanyukt Rojgar Andolan Samiti, representatives from a number of civil society organisations staged a Tiranga March from Nand Nagri in northeast Delhi on Tuesday in support of a national employment policy.
Gopal Rai, a member of the Delhi Cabinet and the founder of the Desh Ki Baat Foundation, led the march, which began in front of the Gagan Cinema in Nand Nagri. Before the movement could reach Jantar Mantar, the planned location, it was stopped by the police near Gokulpuri.
"This movement for implementation of National Employment Policy will continue in Nand Nagri till August 22. We appeal to all the citizens of the country to join the movement," Delhi minister Gopal Rai said after the police stopped the Tiranga March.
From August 16 to August 22, Jantar Mantar was to host the Rojgar Andolan. Rai added that the march was meant to end at Jantar Mantar, but the police prevented that from happening.
"Tiranga Yatra is being taken out all over the country, but if we are raising the issue of employment in our Tiranga padyatra (march), we are being stopped. It is not acceptable to us at all and this movement will continue," a statement issued by Sanyukt Rojgar Andolan Samiti said on Tuesday.
More than 2,000 representatives from 200 different organisations participated in the Tiranga March, according to the statement, and once it was stopped, they sat on a fast.
"In view of the rising unemployment rate in the country, we along with the intellectuals of all the regions of the country, have prepared a draft of the National Employment Policy. We wish to share it with the national government in order for this draft to be legitimately approved by Parliament," Rai said in the statement.
