Ukrainian forces making 'rapid and powerful' gains in southern part of war-ravaged country: Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that his forces were making "rapid and powerful" gains in the southern part of the country. Zelensky said that some of the territories were recaptured by the Ukrainian army in the regions of Kherson, Lugansk and Donetsk.

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday claimed that the forces of his country were making "rapid and powerful" gains in the southern part of the country. Zelensky said that the Ukrainian troops had retaken "dozens" of villages from Russia this week, reported AFP.

"The Ukrainian army is quite rapidly and powerfully advancing in the south," Zelensky said in his address on social media as quoted by the news agency. He further added that "dozens of settlements" had been recaptured in the southern and eastern parts of Ukraine.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexation of four Ukrainian regions - Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Lugansk and Donetsk. Zelensky said that some of the territories were recaptured by the Ukrainian army in the regions of Kherson, Lugansk and Donetsk.

Notably, referendums were held in these regions last week after being annexed by Moscow. The Ukrainian President said that Russian forces had retreated from eight settlements in the southern Kherson region. It is a key agricultural area of Ukraine.

Recently Ukrainian forces have launched a counter-offensive in the southern and eastern parts of the war-ravaged country. As per the latest maps revealed by Moscow, Russian troops had retreated from many areas in the Kherson region including along the west bank of the Dnieper River.

The maps indicated that Russian forces had also abandoned the east bank of the Oskil River. The Ukrainian President exuded confidence that the forces of his country would regain all the lost territories. Ukrainian troops have reportedly managed to recaptured thousands of square kilometers of territories in the southern and eastern parts.
