Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari has shared pictures of the Goa-Karnataka four-lane coastal highway which is nearly complete.
The 187-km stretch connecting the Goa-Karnataka border to Kundapur section of NH 17 cuts across diverse terrain with some iconic geological features as it is flanked by the Arabian Sea to its west and the Western Ghats along the eastern side.
“Magnificent due to its scenic view, this project is an important coastal highway link between West and South India,” Gadkari wrote on Twitter.
In a series of tweets, the Union Transport Minister explained the importance of the project with fascinating detail.
“The strategic highway passes through a variety of terrains with almost 50% of the length passing through rolling terrain (45 km) and mountainous terrain (24 km),” he said.
“Presently, 173 Km (92.42 % of the total work is completed) and while traffic is open on the project, the remaining project will be completed by December 2022.”
Not only does the highway offer a view to interstate motorists, but it also connects important commercial centres along the way, including Panvel, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Panaji, Margao, Karwar, Udupi, Surathkal, Mangalore, Kozhikode, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, & Kanyakumari.
The minister believes the coastal highway project will cut down travel time, ease up traffic on other intra and interstate routes and might even prevent accidents courtesy of what he described as “world class infrastructure”.
Even before its completion, the Goa Karnataka coastal highway has managed to capture attention around the world. Previously, Norwegian diplomat and former politician Erik Solheim had posted an aerial shot of a beachside stretch of the road in Karnataka’s Udupi, calling it the “world’s most beautiful cycling route”.
