Twitter Inc’s largest stakeholder Elon Musk, on Saturday, tweeted a list of 10 most-followed accounts on the micro-blogging website but the world’s richest person had a grievance: most of the top accounts on Twitter don’t post much content. The list also features Indian prime minister Narendra Modi is at number 9 with a following of 77.1 million, one notch lower than Musk himself who has 81 million followers on the platform.
The list from the Twitter account of World of Statistics, which Musk posted, had names like former US president Barack Obama (131.4 million followers), singer Justin Bieber (114.3 million) and Katy Perry (108.8 million) and others top accounts belonging to popular artists Rihanna and Taylor Swift.
While Modi is a die-hard Twitter user, who posts everything from his daily agenda to greeting foreign leaders, high profile users such as pop stars Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber hardly post, Musk rued.
For example, @taylorswift13 hasn't posted anything in 3 months," Musk asked. "And @justinbieber only posted once this entire year," the Tesla and SpaceX CEO further commented.
Musk, who recently picked up a 9.2% stake for nearly $3 billion in the social media platform, typical of his brash style, posed another question to his followers: Is Twitter dying?
Twitter said it is testing with some new features, among which fares a long-demanded ‘edit’ button, the platform said in an April Fool’s tweet. However, the platform later clarified that the update on edit button was not an April Fool’s prank as it is actually being tested by the company.
Musk also pitched a raft of changes to the social media giant’s Twitter Blue premium subscription service, which includes reducing the subscription price, curbing advertisements, and allowing users to pay in cryptocurrency dogecoin.
The Tesla boss was given a board seat in the company after he disclosed his stake in the company to SEC—something which alarmed some Twitter employees, who fear about the platform’s ability to moderate content with a self-declared “free-speech absolutist” Musk on board.
"Price should probably be ~$2/month, but paid 12 months up front & account doesn't get checkmark for 60 days (watch for credit card chargebacks) & suspended with no refund if used for scam/spam," Musk said in a tweet.
"And no ads," Musk suggested. "The power of corporations to dictate policy is greatly enhanced if Twitter depends on advertising money to survive,” he further opined.
